Chapter Seven

“So, Keith, you met Evie back in high school?”

“Yes, that’s right. We were in a play together. Peter Pan. I was Nana. The dog?”

“Frannie?” Drew interrupted.

“Just a second, Drew.” Frannie smiled up at one of the groomsmen she’d just met. “Who did Evie play?”

“Oh, she was Wendy. I was really jealous. She got to fly while I was earthbound and did nothing but bark.”

“Frannie, I—”

She held up a hand in Drew’s direction. “She really flew? How’d they pull that off?”

“The school actually hired a professional company to come in with the wires and all the rest of the equipment we needed to pull it off. They stayed for a week and trained the crew how to use it all, too. It cost a small fortune, but you should have seen the looks on the kids’ faces in the audience when Peter and Wendy took off into the air.”

“I bet. I—”

“Frannie, I hate to interrupt, but—”

No he didn’t. He’d been doing it consistently, every time she started a conversation with someone. Especially a male someone. “Drew, what is the matter with you? You’ve been acting odd all night. Is there something wrong?”

“It’s getting late, Frannie. Don’t you have an early appointment to get your hair and makeup done?”

“Ten o’clock isn’t all that early, Drew.” Frannie checked her wristwatch. “And it’s only eleven-thirty. It’s not like I’m going to turn into a pumpkin or anything. Aren’t you enjoying yourself?”

No, as a matter of fact, he wasn’t enjoying himself. Not that he’d admit any such thing to Frannie. Some of Evie’s bridesmaids were darn good-looking women with no sign of anything significant on their left hand. But instead of feeling like he was in heaven, Drew felt as though he’d been dropped into hell as he watched Frannie being personable, making sure she spoke to everyone in the room. Did she have to be so darn friendly? Every male in the place probably thought she was coming on to him the way she was dispensing smiles so freely.

And that was totally unfair and he knew it. Man, he really disliked this new side of himself he was suddenly manifesting. He could be a real jerk. Who’d have thought it?

“Listen, Drew, I can catch a ride with—”

No! He’d brought her, he’d take her home. “Frannie, you’ve been up since five. You’ve got to be tired. You won’t be able to enjoy the day tomorrow or look your best if you don’t get some sleep tonight.”

Frannie excused herself. “I’m sorry, Keith. It looks like my ride is ready to leave.”

Keith’s eyes shifted between Frannie and Drew and back again. Clearly, he was trying to figure out the dynamics of their relationship. “I’ll see you tomorrow?”

Frannie smiled. “I’ll look forward to it.” She let Drew hustle her away. As soon as they were out of earshot, she hissed between clenched teeth, “What is your problem? Tell me you’re sick. Tell me you’ve had too much to drink and need me to drive. Tell me something so I don’t continue thinking you’re an absolute idiot.
